5 Problems with Locks That Can Stress You Out

Some problems can cause plenty of stress. Here are problems with locks that you can straighten out with the help of a professional locksmith.

We all tend to panic when we lose our keys. But we usually don’t worry about the lock that the key opens. After all, locks are stationary and are meant for our protection. But some problems can cause plenty of stress. Here are problems with locks that you can straighten out with the help of a professional locksmith.

The Key Broke

It’s a nightmare scenario: you think nothing of it as you put your key in the lock. Then you turn the key, and it snaps. One of the biggest problems with locks is when the key breaks and a shard of the blade is still in the lock. Be careful when opening or closing the lock. This will ensure that the lock closes securely and will open smoothly.

The Key Won’t Go In

Another common problem is when the key won’t go into the lock. If that’s the problem, take a moment to make sure you’re trying to use the correct key. When it’s dark out, and you’re tired, you may not immediately realize that you are trying to open your home’s front door with your car key. You may also need to reorganize your keyring or get a brand new set of keys made. Sometimes, the problem could be that the key wasn’t cut correctly.

It Locks Slowly

Those first two lock problems had to do with the keys associated with them. If your door’s lock locks slowly, then there is a problem too. It could be a buildup of dirt that makes it stick. Grab a cotton swab and try to clean it out. Alternatively, you may need to lubricate the lock, but don’t do this with grease or oil. These can gunk up the locks even more. Instead, use some special sprays formulated for this purpose.

Latch Doesn’t Close

When the latch doesn’t close, it’s a problem with the structure of the door. Unfortunately, this also prevents your locks from working as they should. The strike plate and door jamb need to be adjusted, and sometimes the door needs to be removed and replaced.

The Bolt Sticks

One last problem is when the bolt sticks. If there is an issue with the deadbolt on the door, then you need professional expertise. This isn’t something you can do by yourself unless you have the know-how of a professional locksmith. Sometimes it’s much cheaper just to get a brand new lock, so don’t hesitate to ask us for advice!
