The holiday season is finally here, so  it’s even easier to forget something simple – your keys. Whenever you leave the house, it’s important to take three things: your phone, your wallet, and your keys. After all, you probably keep your house keys and car keys on the same ring. But since you’re stressed out running errands, you might accidentally lock yourself out. Here are some helpful locksmith tips on how to avoid locking yourself out.

Consider a Different Doorknob

If you have a traditional doorknob, maybe something you can do is switch to a different style of knob. See, if you locked the door from the inside and left your keys behind, then that’s how you locked yourself out. You might not even notice that you’ve locked yourself out until you notice you’ve lost your keys, in which case you might need some rekeying. Either way, it’s worth it to call a locksmith.

The different doorknob you choose could be keyless. This keyless knob would depend on more than one deadbolt to increase your security. Just make sure you have a spare key for that extra deadbolt!

Give Someone You Trust a Spare

Do you have a neighbor that you trust? You can give them a spare key to hold onto, just in case. Alternatively, if a relative lives nearby, you could also entrust them with an extra key. When you give your neighbor a key, they can check in on your house while you’re away for the holidays. But if you do get locked out, try to make sure it when your keyholders are around to help you. Otherwise, you might need to keep another key in your car.

Have a Spare Key in Your Car

Keeping a spare key in your car is another good idea. While three spare keys can get confusing, the more, the merrier! However, although this is a good idea, it’s only worthwhile if you don’t keep your house keys on the same ring as your car keys. You don’t want to get locked out of your car, either. So if you choose to have a spare key in your car, hide it so well only you know how to find it, so an unscrupulous fake locksmith or potential burglar can’t uncover it.

Consider Integrated Access Control Systems

An integrated access control system is a good idea for your business. That way, you won’t have to worry about employees losing keys or getting locked out of the office when no one else is around to help you.
