The key you use to get into your home and make sure it is secure is one of the most valuable assets you have. Take a minute to think about the wide variety of locks that you might need – for your car, a storage unit, an interior room, or a file cabinet at the office. Now think about how often deadbolts or padlocks are attached to those locks. You might be tempted to use the same key for deadbolts and door locks. The question is, can and should they share that key?
When deciding on the deadbolt and door locks you install, your lifestyle will play a significant role in what you choose to have, protecting your home and your family. Always be realistic. Having a second key as a spare could be an excellent idea, but when you’re in a rush to get out the door in the morning, it could just present another hassle. Still, if you are interested in the prospect of increasing your security, then having a second set of keys could be worth the investment.
Never give out access to both keys at the same time unless it is someone you can trust. Keeping the keys separate does increase the overall security value of having a single key assigned to each mechanism. Losing one of the keys can be stressful, but it reduces the chances of an intruder gaining access to your property without your knowledge. Putting both keys on the same keyring makes it easier to lose both keys and doesn’t necessarily increase overall security.
Then again, having distinct could be potentially unnecessary. Your home office could benefit if you work from home and handle sensitive documents regularly. If you live in a neighborhood that is prone to have a higher level of crime, then this becomes even more crucial. But if you have the right access control systems, then you could do away with conventional keys altogether!
