Deadbolts and Door Locks

Deadbolts and Door Locks

Deadbolts and door locks are often paired together.

Deadbolts and door locks are often paired together. However, if you have one, then you might wonder why you need the other. One question that could be on your mind is “should I have keys for each lock?” Alternatively, you could be wondering if one key will suffice for both. Here are some things you should think about when making your decisions

Your Current Lifestyle

First and foremost, think about what your current lifestyle is like on a daily basis. If you tend to lose your keys, then needing to deal with a second key is probably a bad idea. Even so, if security is your most important consideration, then having that extra key for a second deadbolt could give you more peace of mind.

Separate is More Secure

Consider this: separate keys increase the security of your home. That’s why it’s important to keep multiple copies of your keys – spread them out amongst whoever has access to your home, such as immediate family members and trusted friends – and hide a key if you have to; but be mindful of where you put it if you go down that route.

You Might Not Need Two Keys

After all, you might not a set of keys – maybe one will be enough. It all comes down to your present circumstances. What do you keep in your home? Where do you live? Depending on the answers to these questions, only having one key might be enough. In other words, you’d only need a key for the door lock and not the deadbolts, especially if you have more than one attached to your door.

Key Loss

It’s easy to worry about lost keys. Simply misplacing them is stressful enough, but what if you drop them while you’re out running errands? When you have two keys, that shouldn’t sound like a problem. Even keeping a spare key in a hidden spot might make a difference, right? Not necessarily. You’d have to call a professional locksmith for help. That’s because the deadbolt and door lock might not separate keys. Locking both at night is different than locking both when you need to leave the house.

It’s Up to You

In the end, the decision is yours and yours alone. There isn’t one answer suitable for everyone. If you want more than one key, then that is easy enough to make happen. All you need to do is speak to a locksmith you know you can trust, such as the team here at Village Lock and Key!
