As your children start to get older, you should trust them with more and more responsibility. One of the biggest responsibilities you can give them is their own house key. Here are two questions to think about when you are deciding whether to give your kids their own keys.
What Are My Kids Like?
The first question you have to ask is “what are your kids like”? Unfortunately, before you can answer this question, you might have other questions to answer so you can figure that out. What’s their temperament? Finding the answers depend on how responsible they are. Even if you only have one child, you can’t compare them to their friends. Answering this question gets trickier once other siblings enter the picture. Age isn’t always a measure of maturity, and it’s a huge sign of faith that you can trust your kids not to lose the keys or misplace them.
One child could be the more responsible and organized one, but that doesn’t mean your younger children will reach that stage at the same age. If one child leaves at all hours of the day and leaves the door unlocked, then it’s probably a sign that they can’t remember to take their keys with them, and more importantly, it’s a sign they can’t follow the rules you set for them.
Can They Follow The Rules?
This question is a logical follow-up to the first one. You always want to be sure that your home and your family are as safe as possible, no matter what neighborhood you live in. Let’s say your child always listens to you and always stick to the rules. In fact, they love the rules. Once you’ve decided that your children are ready for the key you give them, you have to explain the expectations you have for them. Tell them about the rules, such as they can never lend a key to someone else, and also tell them about what could happen if they bend or break those rules. If they understand all of what you tell them, then you can give them the key.
