Once you have moved into a new home, it’s time to consider upgrading the security for your home. One of the easiest ways to do this is to hire a locksmith who you can trust. Village Lock and Key have some of the best technicians around. Here are some tips for upgrades to your home to make everyone feel safer.

Get New Locks on the Doors

Every door should get new locks. Although you can buy new locks at the store, it’s not a good idea to try and install them yourself. As handy as you might think you are, if you make a mistake, you might not know how to fix it. That’s why it’s so much better to leave it in the hands of professionals. Get deadbolts for every door. That will ensure that they have more security, even if you are unsure about getting double deadbolts.

Entry locks need the most attention since the doors at the front and back of your home have direct access. These locks can be rekeyed, but anyone with the right key can still get in, so keep that in mind. Any intruders will have a tough time getting in if you have boosted the security potential of your doors. Plus, neighbors will probably spot someone unfamiliar and call the police, which can save you a lot of trouble and heartbreak.

Sliding doors also need to be kept secure. New cylinders need to be installed to make sure the lock still works. That’s because you might not know how old the sliding glass door is, especially if the house is a rental property. Here’s another valuable piece of advice from your trusty locksmiths: get a door bar installed if you don’t already have one.

Gauge the Garage

There are many examples of locksmith tips that you may have heard about in the past. But something you might not have heard about is how important it is to keep the garage secure. Gauge how easy it is to get in and out of the house through your garage. The automatic garage door opener needs to be maintained. There is also an inner access door that connects the garage to the rest of the house. That door needs to be kept locked.

Wind Up the Windows

Don’t forget about the windows! If your windows can be locked, then they will need keys. Listen to some more advice from your locksmith: use the locks when you’re not home or getting ready to go to bed. You can also get more locksmith tips about what to do if you like to sleep with an open window. It’s still pretty warm at night, but you don’t want that to be the single point of failure.
