Locksmith Tips: How to Avoid Getting Locked Out

Every homeowner has nightmares about locking themselves out of their home. Here are some helpful tips from your friendly neighborhood locksmith on how to avoid getting locked out.

Every homeowner has nightmares about locking themselves out of their home. Most of the time, no one wants to bring their keys if they’re running to the car to grab something or they need to make a quick trip to the laundry room when there is no such setup inside their home. Here are some helpful tips from your friendly neighborhood, locksmith on how to avoid getting locked out.

Give Your Neighbor a Spare Key

If you can trust your neighbor to help you in your time of need, then you can trust them to hold onto a spare key. Have them keep it secret and keep it safe, especially for the times that you are going to be away from home and worried that you might lose your keys somewhere that you won’t notice until its too late. Do this same favor for your neighbors whenever they need you to; it’s just part of being a good neighbor. That way, if anyone loses a key, there are backup keys to allow access without much trouble.

Upgrade Your Phone Case

This suggestion is a little more high tech. Choose a phone case that has a hidden compartment for your phone. That way, you can never forget your keys when you leave the house – unless you are prone to leaving the house without your phone, that is. This is a convenient way to make sure that you never lose your keys when you go out to run errands or go out and meet friends for a meal and enjoy yourself for a few hours. However, it is still essential to keep track of all your belongings – don’t leave your phone behind in the car, and if you are prone to losing track of your keys, see if you can use other devices to hunt it down at your first opportunity.

Hide the Key Somewhere Inconspicuous

One last idea for avoiding a lockout is to hide a spare key. Keeping spare keys hidden inside your house is always a good idea, but you should be extra careful about where to leave them when they need to be out of sight and inconspicuous. If you’re not sure what to do, then it’s time to ask your locksmith what else they can suggest that you do. You can choose to either hide the original and keep the spare on you or hide the extra. It depends on whether or not you are worried about losing a master key to your home.
